It's the final countdown

Can you just see the big hair flowing, the spandex shinning, the sound of Europe rocking your speakers. What a great song that is, and so very relevant for me right now. The final countdown is on for me. On this Sunday I will run my first ever marathon. This is something I have been training for since the fall, something I would have never, ever thought possible until recently, and something I can so very excited about. I have been lucky enough in my life to have done a lot of fun things, but this will be the hardest/most rewarding thing I will do as an individual to this point in my life. And, I think the example I am setting for my children will have a lasting impact in their lives as well.

I'll be sure to blog all about it next week after it's all said and done...hopefully I'll be physically able to type it then.

Dad Vanity

I don't consider myself a vain person. I try to keep up my appearance but I don't get obsessed with the way I look, in that metro sexual kind of way. I am pretty comfortable in my own skin and if someone doesn't like it well then to bad for them. I will admit however that something about me has changed for the better and I can't help but be just a little excited about it. I have been training for a marathon coming up on Memorial Day, and with that I've been trying to watch what I eat more than I have in the past. For me it is more about health and not looks, but on a recent trip to Macy's to buy pants I have discovered that I am wearing 34 waist...WHAT? I haven't warn a 34 waist since college, but then again I have not been at the weight I am currently at since college. Now again, I am not vain...I don't scratch the waist size off my pants like Seinfeld, but this is kinda cool. Maybe I am more vain than I thought...and if you don't like it then too bad. I'm kinda skinny again!!!!

Peace

I can't help but feel total peace and calm these days. I can't explain it really, especially with the current recession and total unknown with our economic status, and the business that I am currently in feeling the effects of it. But that is not bothering me. Neither is our weather (wet snow and clouds). And neither are any of the other things that normally drive me nuts or bum me out. I am at peace with everything and everyone. It's a very good feeling, and I hope it shows to those who are around me. I think if more people had this feeling in their lives things would not be so bleak, so turbulent, so sad. Life is such a wonderful gift and it is so, so short that to not enjoy it would be a waste. I don't know what the future will bring tomorrow, and that is just fine with me.

Be careful what you say

There was a time in our lives that my wife and I could talk about anything in our house with no worries. When our daughters starting getting to the age that they could understand what we were saying we went to talking more softly or speaking in code. I feel that those are no longer good options for us since our girls started repeating our conversations or asking questions about them. Case in point, shortly after we attended one of our teenage nieces cheer leading competitions (yes, I know...what can I say. I am outvoted on most of these things) my wife made the comment that I am sure she never thought would be overheard, and never repeated. That is until a family function a few weeks back when the mother of our cheer leading niece mentioned another competition was coming up, but since our oldest daughter explained to her that night that her mother (my wife) would "rather stick forks in her eyes then attend another cheer leading competition" we probably were not interested.

Back to the future

Just a real quick story this Friday before the weekend that strikes me as kind of funny. When I run on my treadmill I like listening to music instead of the TV, but I like having the TV on so I can watch something. This was a great deal when we had ESPN because I could turn on a game and listen to music at the same time, the perfect indoor running environment in my opinion. Well, ESPN was cut out of the budget along with the other 500 channels we were getting, so now I have to be a little creative. My parents had recently uncovered some old VHS tapes of my high school basketball games so I thought it would be fun to watch those while running. I popped in a tape last week and the date on the bottom was February 8, 1989....THAT JUST OVER 2O YEARS AGO ALMOST TO THE DATE....CREEPY. It actually has been fun to watch the games again, but, and my wife will love this...I cheer and boo while watching. I even start giving the me from 20 years ago a hard time when I didn't play well. "B" thinks it's ridicules when I watch highlights from a game I watched the same day (don't all guys do that?), so you can imagine what she will think when she reads this.

UNTIL NEXT TIME...DAD IN TRAINING OUT!
